Viva La Mustard! An afternoon with Green Mountain Mustard + Rombauer Vineyards
Posted on December 17, 2014
Lo & Tee here! Last month, via social media (twitter, y’all – get on it @thegrapegirls), we accepted the challenge from Michael at Green Mountain Mustard Company to review. Always down for some grainy goodness, we gladly accepted and Michael sent us some samples: Golden Grain Mustard and Merry Berry Holiday Mustard.
He even sent along some yummy recipe cards including 55 ways to use the mustard. Mustard Spam, anyone?
We tweeted @VTMustard (that’s Green Moutain’s handle, y’all) and asked, DUH, what wine to pair said mustard samples with. We are the GRAPE girls, after all, and believe that no meal, snack or condiment is complete without wine. Michael replied with one of our faves, Rombauer Vineyards (@rombauervino). YAAASSS. We chose to pair the Golden Grain with Rombauer Chardonnay, and the Merry Berry with Rombauer Merlot.
*Fancy Rombauer Gift Basket Not Included. We just thought it was pretty.
What ensued was a hilarious moment of eating, drinking and Merry Berry-making. What we loved about the Golden Grain Mustard was the texture from the large grains, the spicy kick from the red pepper flakes, and the hint of sweetness from the maple syrup (yes, maple syrup!). Paired with the light, crisp chardonnay, this was a mustard we could see ourselves loving year-round. The Merry Berry caught us by surprise: after all, cranberry mustard? Is that even a thing? YES. Yes it is. The creaminess of the Merry Berry is simply delightful. The sweetness was just right (maple syrup + cranberry = PARTY IN YOUR MOUTH), and it’s just savory enough to not feel like you’re eating your dessert for dinner. We found that this one was not something that you’d want year-round, but is the PERFECT holiday addition to your turkey, chicken, pork tenderloin, or grilled cheese sandwich. Plus, the smooth merlot paired with it makes it the perfect comfort food combo. Light a fire, grab a blanket and watch some Lifetime while enjoying this perfect pairing.
Needless to say, we walked away from this one forever changed. Who knew that mustard could make such a specific difference in a meal? Not us, that’s for sure, but boy oh BOY are we glad we took this challenge. Green Mountain Mustard, you’ve made a believer outta The Grape Girls!
Thank you, Michael. Thank you, Green Mountain Mustard. Thank you, Rombauer Vineyards.
We are girls and we like the grapes…AND the mustard.
