Happy Hangover

Posted on November 1, 2014

So Halloween has come and gone and how did it leave you? Feeling like death on a stick? That last “treat” got you “tricked”?

Never fear! The Grape Girls are here- ready to coax you through those hangover blues with some morning after recipes like mom used to make…

Once you broke the seal you peed for like, ever, didn’t you? News flash: While experiencing the euphoria that only comes from REALLY having to pee, you were also expelling massive amounts of potassium from your body. The solution is simple. Put a banana on it. Bananas are loaded with Potassium that’ll help to regulate your body’s water and mineral balance. So undress that banana like your life depends on it. Which it kinda does right now.

This ancient and spicy medicinal root is good for what ails you. It’s helped sailors with seasickness for centuries, so it can handle the not-so-fresh feeling that is your body’s current state. Here’s a simple recipe for a Ginger hot toddy:

Ingredients: Ginger root, water, 1 lemon, 1 orange, honey

  1. Cut 10 to 12 slices of ginger root
  2. Combine sliced root with 4 cups of water
  3. Boil concoction for 10 minutes
  4. Strain and add fresh squeezed juice of one orange
  5. Add fresh squeezed juice of ½ a lemon
  6. Add ½ cup of honey
  7. Stir, sip, and enjoy as much as you like

If making this drink still seems like more than you can handle, just pop the top on a warm ginger ale.

The juicy, red fruit (yes, it’s a fruit remember?) contain a little thing called fructose, a naturally occurring sugar found in honey and fruit, giving them their characteristic sweet taste. Simply slice up your tomato and add some salt and pepper OR you can juice them. When juicing, try adding a little fresh lime juice- it’ll heighten the end result. The fructose will help your body metabolize the alcohol faster. Meaning? That it gets out of your system sooner, making it possible for you to get up and do it all again!

Milk Thistle

Another ancient cure, this time used to help detoxify and regulate liver function. It comes in supplement form, either in a capsule, tea, or drops, and helps your body to eliminate toxins incurred from a hard night of partying. It is to ideally be consumed, both before going to bed and throughout the next day.

Not just a thing being wasted while you’re hung over, Thyme is another ancient medicinal that happens to be a part of the mint family. When experiencing the aftermath of a hard night out, crush five to six thyme leaves and add to four cups of water- prepare to boil. Once water begins to boil, turn down heat and let simmer for five minutes. After cooking is complete, strain and drink while warm. The thyme will not only help soothe muscles, it will also help to calm that angry tummy.

In The Grape Girl school of thought, the best remedy for a hangover, of course, is to just maintain. Plan ahead. Don’t over do it. Remember to hydrate. AND EAT SOMETHING, for crying out loud. When the voice -of -reason tells you that you’re done and should go home, honor it. Hail that taxi and pack it in for the night. Your friends will thank you. Why? Because no one wants to really hold your hair.

Grape Girl Hangover Bonus:

BEFORE you end your party next time, put down that kiss-off-death tequila shot and do a shot of wheatgrass instead. Wheatgrass is a natural detoxifier that helps to hydrate and energize cells. Try a shot at night and another in the morning to end that hangover before it even starts.
